At the Head of Their Class: Outstanding Teachers Honoured
TORONTO, October 4, 2006
Ontario teachers will honour their outstanding peers tomorrow at the 2006 OTIP Teaching Awards ceremony in Toronto. This year's ceremony is taking place as part of OTF's commemoration of World Teachers' Day, recognizing the contribution of teachers to society.
In October 1994, at the 44th Session of the International Conference on Education in Geneva, UNESCO declared October 5 as World Teachers' Day and recommended that this be an annual event
The Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan sponsors the awards which are administered by the Ontario Teachers' Federation.
This year's honourees work in small towns and large cities, with the highest achievers and kids who need a boost, using everything from stuffed animals to PowerPoint business presentations as their tools.
Randy McGlynn, CEO of OTIP notes, “What they have in common is a passion for teaching.”
“We have awards in the categories of elementary, secondary and beginning teachers this year,” McGlynn says, “recognizing teachers who use innovative methods, enthuse and engage students, reflect the multi-ethnic heritage of Ontario and encourage the creative use of technology in the classroom, among other criteria.”
World Teachers' Day
“Holding this event on World Teachers' Day is our way of marking the contribution of every teacher in preparing the next generation to function in our ever-changing world,” says OTF President Hilda Watkins.
“These four teachers represent outstanding achievement in the profession. These teachers will be present in the Ontario Legislature to listen as they and their colleagues are being recognized for their work.”
The teachers were nominated by students, parents and colleagues, each with a unique story of how the nominee works to motivate, challenge and inspire, gives selflessly of time and dedication and puts students' needs first.
