About the OTIP Teaching Awards

The OTIP Teaching Awards are organized by the Ontario Teachers' Federation and funded by the Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan. The program began in 1991 and was relaunched in 2004.

Past winning teachers have covered a range of disciplines, teaching methods, age groups and geographical locations.

What they all have in common is an energetic interest in doing their best, at being creative to achieve their goals, and, most of all, they put students first.

The nominations are open to all teachers in Ontario's publicly funded schools, including public, Catholic, and francophone school boards, and anyone may nominate.

Recognize and Celebrate Excellent Teachers

The nominations are submitted online in one of three categories: elementary, seconday, and beginning teacher. A committee of classroom teachers from OTF’s Affiliates reviews all nominations and develops a short list of up to 10 candidates per category for consideration by the final jury.

The final jury includes representatives of the Ontario Teachers’ Federation, the Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan, high level representatives of educational stakeholder groups, as well as general supporters of publicly funded schools in Ontario.

The winning teachers are announced on or about World Teachers' Day, October 5.

Prizes and Presentation Ceremony

All nominated teachers receive a Certificate of Nomination, and all shortlisted candidates additionally receive a Certificate of Merit.

Winning teachers are hosted at a fall awards ceremony in Toronto where they are presented with a personal award of $1,000 and a Certificate of Recognition. Their schools are recognized as well with a $1000 prize and a Certificate of Recognition.

The ceremony will also honour the winners of two other teaching awards, the Toronto Star Teacher Award and the Prix d’enseignement TFO.

TVO Vignette Featuring Winning Teachers

The winning teachers are featured in a video vignette to be aired on TVO and TFO throughout the year. View these videos on the individual teacher page in the Winning Teachers section of this website.
